Maxwell Konadu: “I joined Asante Kotoko because everybody wanted me at the club”

Maxwell Konadu joined the Ghanaian champions early this week on a two year deal following Kotoko decision to sack Norwegian Kjetil Zachariasen last month.

The former player of the club has revealed why he choose to make that sensational transfer back to his darling club. It looks that Konadu was not ready to make any return to his current post anytime soon but that Kotoko made him feel wanted at Baba Yara this transfer that forced him to join the Kumasi based club.

Futball Surgery can confirm that management of Kotoko had made efforts in previous pasts to bring the Ghanaian trainer to back to the club after his departure in 2012, but they failed on many occasions.

Kotoko put in much effort this time round before they were able to commit Konadu’s future to them, as claimed by the Ghanaian trainer.

“The difference is that this time the team’s efforts to get me were greater than all the previous years, that also played a major role.”

“Dignitaries from all facets who have the club at heart kept calling me every now and then, including our own Dr Kwame Kyei (Executive Chairman of Asante Kotoko),” Konadu told Kumasi-based Fox FM.

“I think it’s the right time for me to make that decision, because the efforts from the officials to get me was greater, and in football too, even for players they go where they are most wanted”, he added.

“Most of the times it’s not about where you get the most money but if you go where you are wanted the most that is where you are mostly successful, so I think the timing is right and I don’t think there will be a problem”, the Ghanaian trainer concluded.

That fact of everyone wanted Maxwell Konadu at Kotoko may have influenced the trainer’s move to the Garden City though, building his trophy cabinet with titles including but not limited to the CAF Champions League and the Confederation Cup could be Konadu’s hidden reason for joining Kotoko.

It looks very likely for the manager to achieve continental glory given his experience on the African continent, after guiding the Local Black Stars to win the 2017 WAFU tournament and reaching the finals of the 2019 edition in Senegal after two years.

He has also played a big part in Ghana’s last two finals of CAF Nation tournaments, guiding the Ghana local based players to the finals of the 2014 CHAN competitions in South Africa before assisting the Black Stars to the finals of the 2015 AFCON tournament in Equatorial Guinea.
