SWAG President Kwabena Yeboah opposes against cancellation of Ghana Premier League

Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) President Kwabena Yeboah has opted against majority’s decision to cancel the 2019-2020 football season.

The Premier League has been suspended since March without clear date of return. There have been spectrum of views surrounding restart of the GPL in recent weeks with majority of football people calling on cancellation of the season including the league.

Though this stance has not been certified by the Ghana Football Association, Kwabena Yeboah has disagreed with this idea. He seems to support the school of thought that believes in resumption the Ghana league.

He went on to highlight measure that can support the restart of the season amid spread of coronavirus.

“We cannot continue to shut our football for long. If all the markets, churches, schools have been allowed to open with some regulations and policies to observe the protocols, then why not football”, he said on Happy FM.

“There can be spacing done at the various stadia, with people’s temperatures taken before they enter.

“Clubs can sell some tickets to ensure proper social distancing is observed at the venue. Even in some Ghana Premier League games, the games are played in virtually empty stadia.

‘At the beginning of the pandemic, information was scanty about the virus but now we have come to understand that the virus has come to live with us.

“For those saying we should cancel the season and wait till August what is the guarantee that the virus will end for it to be safe to play football. If we observe the right protocols we can play our football”.

Most leagues in Europe have restarted including the EPL that encountered a thorough scrutinization of Project Restart by the UK government but finally got under last Wednesday.

On the African continent, few leagues have resumed but all the continent’s major leagues are facing challenges to resume including the Egyptian Premier League.

The Ghana FA has announced that it will make a decision on the future of the league on June 30.
