Sulley Muntari Black Stars return assessed by goalkeepers trainer

The former Serie A midfielder’s return to the Black Stars been assessed following his move to Hearts of Oak in the Ghana Premier League.

Muntari has joined the Ghana Premier League champions to bolster his career that can send him back to Europe and Black Stars camp.

Black Stars goalkeeper’s trainer, Richard ‘Olele’ Kingson, has suggested that a return to the national team is possible for Sulley Muntari.

According to him, the 37-year-old midfielder showed that he hasn’t lost his mojo during last Sunday’s Super Clash against Asante Kotoko.

Muntari returned to the Ghana Premier League earlier this month after signing a short-term contract with the Phobians.

The former Inter Milan and AC Milan midfielder has since made three appearances for Hearts, of which two have been starts.

He was again handed a starting spot and lasted for an hour as the Phobians were held to a goalless draw by Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Discussing Muntari’s performance against the Porcupine Warriors, Kingson said the veteran midfielder’s return to the Black Stars should not be ruled out.

“Sulley Muntari did so well and I’m sure it will change the scenario about experienced players joining our local clubs,” he told Hot FM.

“Even though his fitness level is not up there, he was good on the day and surely we can’t rule out a call-up for Black Stars.”

Meanwhile, Kingson also disclosed that he’s currently monitoring about 15 goalkeepers for the Black Stars’ no.1 spot.

This follows criticisms over the national team’s choice of goalkeepers following Ghana’s disastrous performance at AFCON 2021.

The 43-year-old was the one who scouted and recommended Joojo Wollacott, with the Swindon Town shot-stopper becoming the Black Stars’ first-choice goalkeeper.

However, Wollaccot conceded five goals in three matches as Ghana exited the AFCON at the group stages, sparking questions over his quality.

This has led to calls for local goalkeepers Danlad Ibrahim and Richard Attah to also be given the chance in the national team.

With the Black Stars set to face Nigeria in a crucial 2022 World Cup qualifying playoff next month, it remains to be seen who will be in post against the Super Eagles.
