GHALCA in talks with Tottenham Hotspur to participate in President Cup 2023

The English Premier League may have a share in Ghana’s Presidential Cup in subsequent years starting next term, according to a report in GhanaSoccerNet.

The source has claimed that Chairman for the Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Kudjoe Fiano has disclosed that discussions are underway to invite Tottenham Hotspur for next time’s President Cup final.

This year’s final will be played between Ghana Premier League powerhouses Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak at the Accra Sports Stadium two days before Independence Day on 6th March, 2022.

After that final, the next President Cup final in 2023 could see Premier League outfit Spurs featuring in the domestic cup possibly against a Ghana Premier League side, Fiano has revealed.

The former Ash Gold SC Chief Executive Officer indicated the game will come off before the tenure of Ghana’s  president Nana Akufo-Addo expires in 2024.

Nana Akufo-Addo is a staunch supporter of the English Premier League side and GHALCA is planing to honor him with that game in Ghana.

“There are plans to honour the president with the clubs he supports locally and internationally (Spurs) in the next edition of the President Cup”, he told Precise FM.

“We have involved clubs outside Ghana in the past and per what we are looking at,the president’s tenure expires in 2024 and we are aware he supports Tottenham Hotspurs so after this year we are looking at engaging authorities in bringing Tottenham Hotspurs to Ghana to play against the club the president supports in Ghana.”

He added: “This is the plan we have for the President Cup but we are involving Kotoko and Hearts this year because that plan has not been concluded.

GHALCA’s approach would be a positive move for Ghana football which could impact on mileage and transfer of local players. The Ghana Premier League mileage has arguably degraded over the years with its clubs struggling to make significant impact in Caf Inter Club football.

Foreign clubs coming in to feature in domestic competitions would be a step in right direction in what Ghana would take path of Egypt, South Africa and Morocco. Premier Soccer League duo Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates have hosted Barcelona and Tottenham respectively in years back.

Morocco won competition to host the FIFA Club World Cup in 2013 and 2014.

“The #ClubWC 2014 will take place in Morocco and all preparations continue as planned,” FIFA said on Twitter.
The tournament, which also took place in Morocco last year, is held annually and features the champion clubs of each continent.
Real Madrid (Europe), San Lorenzo (South America), Western Sydney Wanderers (Asia), Auckland City (Oceania), Cruz Azul (CONCACAF) and Entente Seitif (Africa) will take part, plus Moghreb Athletic, who qualified as champions of hosts Morocco.

Egyptian Premier League sides Zamalek and Al Ahly have also made strong entry into top competitions in Qatar and Saudi Arabia in recent years.

These countries continue to benefit from that huge mingle as players cross to play in top flight football in friendly advanced football while those league land lucrative sponsorship for their leagues, clubs and individual players.
