Zamalek part company with boss Jesualdo Ferreira after defeat to Ghazl El-Mahalla |

Zamalek have announced the departure of Portuguese manager Jesualdo Ferreira following their heavy defeat against Ghazl El-Mahalla on Tuesday.

Following a heavy 3-0 defeat to arch-rivals Al Ahly in the Egyptian Premier League’s 14th round on Saturday evening, Zamalek travelled to face Ghazl El-Mahalla on Tuesday.

El-Mahalla absolutely outclassed the Whites in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead after just 18 minutes, thanks to goals from Gabriel Orok and Ahmed El-Nadry.

Zamalek were much better in the second-half and even managed to grab one back through Ahmed Sayed Zizo’s penalty, but it wasn’t enough for them to get anything out of the game.

The defeat meant that Zamalek are yet to win a game in 2023, with their last win coming back on December 29 when they beat bottom-placed Ismaily 3-1 in Cairo.

Since then, Zamalek suffered four defeats and drew twice, exiting the Egypt Cup from the semi-finals after losing to ten-men Pyramids FC on penalties.

However, it seems like the Ghazl El-Mahalla defeat was the final straw for Jesualdo Ferreira, who has now been sacked with immediate effect from his role.

His replacement has been confirmed to be club legend and former Ferreria’s assistant at Zamalek Osama Nabih.

Nabih was serving as Ferreria’s assistant, before resigning from his role just recently following a reported fall-out with the Portuguese head coach.

A club legend, Nabih served as assistant manager to Zamalek first between 2011 and 2013, before leaving to take the same role at the Egyptian national team under Héctor Cúper.

After Egypt’s elimination from the 2018 World Cup, Nabih took managerial roles at Saudi club Shoalah and FC Masr, before once again returning to Zamalek to assist Patrice Carteron and then Jesualdo Ferreira.

Zamalek now find themselves fifth in the league table, 11 points behind league leaders Al Ahly and only one ahead of seventh-placed Ghazl El-Mahalla.
