Asante Kotoko climb to top of Ghana Premier League after beating WAFA in Kumasi

Asante Kotoko continued their chase for the Ghana Premier League title beating West African Football Academy (WAFA) 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium.

Kotoko have begun hunting for the title this season after missing out to rivals Hearts of Oak last term.

The Kumasi based side opened a strong start but suffered a temporary setback after going three games without a win starting from a draw against Karela United through home defeat to King Faisal to another draw against Real Tamale United.

Kotoko launched a hard-fought victory against Legon Cities to get back to winning ways last Sunday at Dawu. Thanks to Mbella Etouga’s double as the Cities pulling one back in-between the Cameroonian’s strikes.

Etouga has scored three goals for Kotoko and nearly got his side the breakthrough on 25’ minute after the Cameroon International was brought down for a penalty. The referee was wrongful of his penalty decision and overturned it later living WAFA a ton of hope to play for.

Kotoko nearly broke the deadlock early after Stephen Amankona striking the woodwork from a corner when it was 13’ minutes on the clock.

With Amankona striking the posts and penalty overturned, Kotoko ended the first goalless. Kotoko opened the score with Richard Lamptey tabbing from his own rebound. Lamptey initial effort had been saved by WAFA goalkeeper before striking in a second.

WAFA wasn’t a bad side with the 1-0 score line telling how they gave Kotoko a good game. The win sees Kotoko climb to top of the Ghana Premier League table with 20 points with a game against Hearts of Oak in hand.
