Majeed Ashimeru speaks after exceptional performance in Anderlecht win

Ghana midfielder Majeed Ashimeru was exceptional once again for Anderlecht who secured a 2-1 win against Antwerp on Sunday.

Ashimeru contributed immensely with an assist and also made a goal-saving block as Anderlecht made it four wins in their last five league games.

Since the Ghanaian midfielder came in the starting lineup in February, it has been running smoothly for the Purple and White with a 16 out of 18 points captured and qualification for the Belgian Cup final.

His sterling displays have earned him the nickname ‘Magic Majeed’.

He delivered a classy assist for Joshua Zirkzee to open the scoring but it was not the only thing Ashimeru did well against Antwerp.

He blocked Nainggolan from equalising with the scoreline at 2-1 and in between he made several excellent passes between the lines.

“I felt him walk. My connection with Zirk is very good,” Ashimeru said after the game about his assist. And then about his important interception at the 2-1 “Nainggolan is a good player, but I could read him. I knew which ball he would give and I was able to intercept it.”

When you see how many points Anderlecht have collected since Ashimeru came into the team at the beginning of February, you can safely call him the missing link. Ashimeru’s return to the starting lineup has coincided with Anderlecht playing their best football. Pundits believe Ashimeru was the missing link in Vincent Kompany’s team.

But the Ghanaian himself is extremely modest. He said, “If people think that, they have that right, but I think every link in the team is equally important,” it sounds. Whether it was his best match in the purple and white shirt yesterday? “Maybe, but you always have to aim for progress. I can do even better.”

Ashimeru could return to the Black Stars for the 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria after missing out on Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year.
