Richard Ofori could deputize in Black Stars World Cup playoff against Nigeria

Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Richard Ofori will deputize Thomas Partey as Black Stars captain for the 2022 World Cup playoff against Nigeria.

The former Maritzburg goalkeeper who was appointed second deputy captain of the team by former Coach Charles Kwabla Akonnor makes a return to the team after a long injury lay-off.

Ofori missed out on the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament with the Black Stars in Cameroon due to injury.

Since returning from injury the Ghana international has been impressive in post for Orlando Pirates and has been called up by the Black Stars technical team for the crucial encounter.

With Andre Ayew suspended from the game, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey will wear the captains armband and will be supported by Richard Ofori.

Orlando Pirates coach Mandla Ncikazi confirmed the Ghanaian shot stopper’s call up to the Black Stars in an interview.

“Ofori is a top professional, Ghana selected him without playing a game. I was surprised.” Ncikazi told the South Africa media.

“You could just see the confidence he brings and breathes around the defence and I’m sure he is going to lessen the leaking of goals at Pirates because more than the fact that we are not scoring we are also letting in goals and I’m sure it’s going to improve.” He added.

The 28-year-old is expected to reclaim the number one spot from Jojo Wollacot in the game against Nigeria next week Friday.

Ghana host Nigeria in the first leg on March 25, 2022 at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium.

The return leg comes of on March 29, at the Mashood Abiola Sports Stadium in Abuja.
