UEFA announce Champions League restart date in August amid 12-day condensed tournament

The Champions League will restart in three month time from today and all knockout games in men’s competition are packed in a 12-day condensed tournament in Lisbon in August.

The European club competition was suspended in March due to the coronavirus outbreak. The tournament was halted in the 1/16 stage where there was remaining second leg games in the round.

Amid the latest announcement from UEFA, remaining games in round 16 will be played 7-8 August whiles quarter final fixtures come on 12-15, with semi-finals scheduled on August 18-19 and final on August 23.  

UEFA is yet to determine whether remaining 1/16 matches will take place at the respective host stadiums, or in Portugal, but revealed a decision would be made before July 10.

French Legue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain, Atalanta, Atletico Madrid and Bundesliga outits RB Leipzig remains the only four clubs that have qualified for the quarter finals.

It remains uncertain whether fans would be allow to enter stadium for games but UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin comments give sign of hope for supporters to go watch the Champions League and Europa League finals.

“If I would answer today, we don’t think we could have spectators at the Champions League or Europa League finals, but things are changing rapidly.

“We will assess the situation at the beginning of July and we will see what the situation will be. It would be incompetent from us if we were to decide in advance about the situation.”

  • Champions League last-16: August 7-8
  • Champions League quarter-finals: August 12-15
  • Champions League semi-finals: August 18/19
  • Champions League final: August 23

Europa League in Germany

In addition, the culmination of this season’s Europa League from the last eight onwards will take place across four venues in Germany between August 10 and 21.

Women’s Champions League in Spain

Meanwhile, all remaining matches in the Women’s Champions League will be played as a knockout tournament in Bilbao, Spain between August 21 and 30.
