CAF Confederation Cup: Lakay leads Pyramids to beat Zanaco while Al Masry stun TP Mazebme

Egypt’s representatives Pyramids FC and Al Masry have continued their strong start to the CAF Confederation Cup campaign with two wins over Zanaco and TP Mazebme.

Drawn in group A alongside CS Sfaxien, Al Ahli Tripoli, and Zanaco, Pyramids had opened their journey with a difficult 2-1 home victory over the Libyan giants.

They then travelled to Zambia to take on Zanaco, who had lost their opening game in Tunisia to CS Sfaxien 1-0.

And Zanaco were no match to Ehab Galal’s men, who secured a 2-0 victory, thanks to a brace from Fagrie Lakay.

The opening goal came just a few seconds before the half-time whistle when Ramadan Sobhi put Lakay through on goal and the South African easily beat the keeper.

In the 83rd minute, Lakay put the game to bed after he dribbled past a keeper following a smart pass by Abdallah El-Said before putting the ball into the empty net.

The win put Pyramids top of their group with six points from two games, three ahead of CS Sfaxien, who still have a game in hand against Al Ahli.

Meanwhile, Al Masry secured a historic 2-0 victory over five-time African champions TP Mazembe to go top of group C.

The Port Said-based club had come back from Cameroon with a 0-0 draw with Coton Sport in the opening game, while Mazembe beat AS Otoho at home.

New signing Yasser Hamed fired the Green Eagles in front after 60 minutes as he turned in Elyès Jlassi’s cross into the back of the net.

Turning from provider to goalscorer, Jlassi secured the win with a second decisive goal in the 67th minute after a great solo effort from Mohamed Antar.

Al Masry now sit top of group C with four points, one ahead of TP Mazembe, while Coton Sport and AS Otoho languish at the bottom of the group ahead of their game against each other.
