Timo Werner’s release clause expires today but Chelsea could still sign below £53million

RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner is very close to joining Chelsea after it broke into the air last week that Frank Lampard’s side have agreed to pay the player’s £53million release clause.

Chelsea could have announced the signing of the striker but the issues around travelling due to the coronavirus mean they have been unable to do a medical and finalise the deal just yet.

At the glance, Werner’s release clause expires today which means from tomorrow, RB Leipzig can demand whatever fee they want for their prize asset.

According to talkSPORT, the expiration of Werner’s release clause will still not prevent Chelsea from doing business with the Bundesliga outfits.

But this time, there will be two ways about the transfer where the Blues can now either buy Werner lower or high than the initial release clause of £53million.

German football expert Andy Brassell believes Chelsea could sign the 24-year-old than £53million however.

He told Premier League productions: “It’s been held up a bit by what’s happening post-pandemic, which is going to affect all transfers going forward.

“We know where we are with Werner more than any other transfer because there’s been a buyout clause in there the whole time.

“Liverpool decided they weren’t going to meet that, and that’s why Chelsea were allowed to come in and got an agreement with Werner.

“At the moment it’s the case that the medical can’t take place at the moment, because if the Chelsea medical staff went over to Germany, they’d have to self-quarantine for 14 days.

“It has been suggested in Germany that because Leipzig are happy to facilitate the move, and they’ve planned forward to do so, they may be happy to take a discount on the £53m buyout clause.

“The fact that the buyout clause is due to expire today, is not so much an issue. We do still expect it to still get over the line.”

As per Brassell’s comments Chelsea can still land Timo Werner despite release clause expired.
