Football fans could attend Asante Kotoko Caf Champions League clash against FC Nouadhibou

Football fans in Ghana could return to Stadium after 9 months of sideline from to the sudden surface of coronavirus pandemic in March.

The attendance to Stadium is expected to come in Kotoko’s Caf Champions League clash with FC Nouadhibou in Accra this weekend.

Football fans in the West African country have been omitted in the game since restart of football early last month following resumption of the Ghana Premier League.

But there appears a boost in their return to the Stadium after Asante Kotoko reportedly planning to contact government for supporters to attend their next Caf Champions League game.

“We are going to write to the government through the Sports Ministry to allow to us admit fans to the stadium”, Moses Antwi-Benefo told Happy FM.

“When we went to Mauritania, we inquired from them how the fans were at the stadium to watch the game and they indicated that the country laws allow fans to attend the games.”

“CAF also granted them the permission based on the COVID-19 protocols in the country. So we will plead with the government to allow us to admit about 20,000 fans to the Accra Sports Stadium.”

While it appears the Ghana Premier League side have followed suit what the Mauritania giants did from the first leg in relation to supporting, Kotoko forced Nouadhibou to a 1-1 draw.

Osman Ibrahim struck first under 5’ minutes but the home side responded quickly with Hemeya Tanji’s penalty equalizer before the first half.

Kotoko host the side that have won the last three league titles of Mauritanian Premier League in Ghana but there surrounds uncertainty about the venue to welcome the second leg tie.

Initial reports have indicated that Kotoko will play their Caf Champions League games including Nouadhibou at the Tamale Sports Stadium but there is twist in those reports.

While playing home games in Tamale still stand, their African Champions League matches will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium and instead, their Ghana Premier League games would be hosted at the Tamale Stadium if the government grants permission.

“We have written to the GFA to allow us to play our home games at the Tamale Sports Stadium. We intend to honour only our Premier League games in Tamale.

“If the FA accepts our plea it will help bring back the love and also boost commercial activities in the region”.

The last time Kotoko played at the Tamale Stadium they thrashed rivals Hearts of Oak 3-1 in 2017 MTN FA Cup as former Atletico Madrid forward Sadic Adams completing a historic hat-trick before Thomas Abbey got the consolation.
