JE Sarpong cautions Ghana Premier should return only under behind closed doors mechanism

Veteran Ghanaian coach J.E Sarpong has supported the restart of football in Ghana but only under behind-closed-doors mechanism.

And this comes in effort of the Ghana Football Association to bring back football to its stakeholders after announcing cancellation of all football competitions including the Ghana Premier League back in June.

Most leagues in the world with much emphasis on Europe’s major leagues restarted and have finished under the behind closed doors mechanism.

Ghana could learn the footsteps of the Premier League, Laliga, Seria A and Bundesliga by complying to strict coronavirus pandemic protocols including observation of games played without supporter.

Former Liberty Professionals trainer J.E Sarpong has supported the idea of playing football- thus when it returns supposedly October- behind closed doors.

“Returning football activities in Ghana should implies that club administrators and players should be prepared to play in empty stadiums as is happening in Europe, he told Graphic Online.

“Playing behind closed doors will be the ideal thing for now. Although it will be unpleasant and not motivating enough for players, it has to be observed as part of the safety protocols.”

The GAF has since its cancellation of the previous season endeavor to start a new season but needs to go through a successful processes including getting the approval from national health worker and the government.

The GFA has proposed a new season start date in October but the government is yet to give the green light slowing down beginning of the 2020/2021 season.

If granted government’s approval, clubs are also expected to go through mass covid-19 antigen testing which may involve testing of all players and staffs amid detection of those tested positive to curb the spread of the diseases while the season starts.

There could be overlap of processes amid the start of new season.

While government needs to grant the green light before club’s testing starts, some Ghanaian elite clubs have reportedly planned to begin testing of their players when the government has not yet granted approval.
