TP Mazembe declared champions of Vodacom Ligue 1 for the 18th time as Dr. Congo league cancelled

African giants TP Mazembe have been declared champions of Vodacom Ligue 1 in the Congolese Tier I football league as national league cancelled.

Before the suspension from novel coronavirus pandemic that hit the Congolese football, Mazembe comfortably led the Tier I football league table with 53 points from 20 games.

With cases and death toll of the pandemic showing no signs of decline in Africa, Dr. Congo appear among few Africa countries to announce cancellation of national league.

Football has been suspended for more than a month now, and the prolong suspension of Premier League in the country- Vodacom Ligue 1- has finally led to total cancellation of the 2019-2020 championship season by the Congolese Association Football Federation (FECOFA).

The FECOFA has declared TP Mazembe champions of the season, and that hand them their 18th overall league title and 10th triumph in 14 seasons of the Dr. Congo national football league.

AS Vita Club appeared in second place in the season with 42 points from 21 league games, and together with leaders Mazembe represent the country in the 2020-2021 CAF Champions League.

Maniema Union and Motema Pembe will take the CAF Confederation Cup spot.

The decision by FECOFA marks the fourth African league cancelled after the Kenyan Premier League, Angolan Girabola and the Guinean top-flight.

The result of the cancellation has also affected the relegation and promotion, with Jeunesse Sportive de Kinshasa and Étoile Jaune of Lubumbashi now set for top-flight football – which sees Bukavu Dawa and Nyuki dropping down to Ligue 2.

The Ravens were crushed out of this season’s Champions League by Moroccan outfits Raja Casablanca in the competition’s quarter finals stage.

Mazembe failed to overturn their 2-0 loss from the first league in Morocco, beating the Raja Casablanca 1-0 in the return leg in Lubumbashi a week after their 2-0 defeat whilst AS Vita Club couldn’t make out of this year’s Champions League group stages.
