Liverpool looking forward to beat Arsenal to the signing of Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid

Liverpool are reportedly set to beat Arsenals to the signing of Atletico Madrid midfielder Thomas Partey in summer.

Arsenal are the most identified with the Ghanaian International with many reports claiming the Emirate giants have lined up a £50 million bid to lure the midfielder this summer.

However, Arsenal may be leapfrogged by Liverpool in the race as the World champions have now set their eyes on the Black Stars midfielder.

It has been claimed by Liverpool Echo that Jurgen Klopp is impressed with the performances of Partey- who arguably has been one of Atletico Madrid’s key men in 2019-2020 season- and Klopp knee bringing the Ghanaian to his midfield.

Partey’s display in the Champions League 1/16 against Liverpool at Wanda Metropolitano and Anfield made many sit up and take notes among the Liverpool technical team, and according to reports, they will all support Klopp’s decision to bring in Partey.

However, Partey has three years on his running contract and is expected to leave for £43million- with the this fee not regarded as an obstacle for Liverpool to land their target.

Meanwhile, early this year, Partey, 26, set sight on earning a new contract at Wanda Metropolitano in order to stay Atletico for longer, and that has since hampered potential suitors Manchester United, Arsenal and Inter Milan hopes of signing the Ghanaian International.

“My agent is talking to [Atletico Madrid],” he told Onda Madrid as quoted in Marca via Goal.

“Sometimes we know that we don’t always have what we want and I hope everything goes well.

“Like all the youth players developed here, all who played in the academy want to be here and they know what this club is about.”

He continued with the pleasure he feels for being linked with big clubs, but will only depart if his services are no longer needed Atletico Madrid.

“I think I am proud for having attracted the attention of other teams and this motivates me because it makes me feel that I am doing things well and improving things,” Partey added.

“There are things that you always think since childhood, but when you grow up things can change and you don’t know what can happen, but my desire is to stay here until the team don’t want me anymore.

“These are things that sometimes are not decisions of the player, they are decisions of the club and I always say that if the club wants me here then I will be here until they don’t want me anymore.”

But after the first leg game against Liverpool in the Champions League, the 26-year-old sounded doubt about his future at ATL Madrid after insisting “you never know what can happen (in the future)’.

“I feel good, with confidence, when I am in good shape the team notices. Simeone is like a teacher, like a father to the players, it helps us a lot.

“Atlético is like my home, the place where I want to always be, it’s like my family. I hope to stay in the club, I would like to retire here, but you never know what can happen (in the future). I want to stay here until the club doesn’t love me.”
