Morocco make slow start to African Nations Championship (CHAN) after narrowly beating Togo in group C opener
Morocco have made a slow start to CHAN tournament in Cameroon after a solo performance against Togo in group C opener on Monday afternoon.
The victory commissions the North African side on course of defending their title, having hosted and lifted the ultimate two years ago after beating Nigeria 4-0 in the final in Casablanca.
All this edition’s title favorites have won their opening games with much expectation on Morocco to do so and were perhaps no exception of this set trend.
Hosts Cameroon beat Zimbabwe in opening day of the tournament whiles Bagayoko lone goal handed Mali a slim win over Burkina Faso later as Cameroon and Mali now share top spot of group A.
It was the turn of former champions Lybia last Sunday to make a commading start to the tournament but were forced to a goalless draw by Niger though the North Africans were the better side. The most successful nation in CHAN Dr Congo defeated Congo Brazzaville in the other fixture to go top of group B.
In opening day of group C, Morocco run slow show against Togo with a 1-0 win with strike coming in the first half.
Y. Jabrane put Morocco ahead from a penalty spot on the 27′ minute. Morocco failed to strike again to make a record of the first team to score more than a goal in a match so far.
The score line doesn’t make Togo a bad side. They showed some important aspect of the game after appearing physical and strong on the ball which at point made it difficult for Morocco but lacked the technical and tactical side to score.
Although Togo managed to create some chances with their approach but never converted them as Morocco carry the day.
Morocco will face Rwanda- who take on Uganda in the evening- on Friday as Togo play Uganda. Morocco now lead group C but would have to wait the outcome between Rwanda and Uganda.
