Frank Lampard gave Christian Pulisic his first prem start since August, that was the only change to his eleven that defeated Ajax 1-0 in the Champions League last Wednesday. The America replaced Callum Hudson Odoi on the left wing.
The game started on a slow note as both clubs enjoyed their share of possession in the first 10 minutes. But Chelsea began to grow in confidence as they controlled and swung their passes together.
It took Chelsea 21 minutes on the clock to take the lead. This time, it was not Abraham, Mount or Alonso to put smiles on the face of Chelsea supporters. It was Pulisic who began it all Chelsea’s 4-2 riot against Burnley.
The American capitalized on an error by Matt Lowton inside Burnley half, Pulisic run into Burnley penalty box, followed by a somehow step-over past James Tarkowski before finishing from a close range
Pulisic got his and Chelsea second goal of the night on the 45th minute before completing a first ever career hat-trick on the 56’ minute mark.
To minutes later, Willian sent Chelsea 4-0 up finishing from a tight angle down the right edge of the box after receiving a slide pass from Pulisic.
Four minutes to full time, Burnley started to pile pressure on Chelsea in search for a consolation as they got two quick goals in three minutes. Jay Rodriguez on 86’ minute got Burnley their first consolation after scoring a rocket 35 yard from Chelsea poles. Dwight McNei completed Burnley’s second consolation on 89’ minute.
Pulisic’s hat-trick makes him the first Chelsea player to score a hat-trick in nine years after Drogba against Wigan in May 2010. The American’s hat-trick also makes him the youngest Chelsea player to register a hat-trick to his name, and a first career hat-trick.
Chelsea are fourth on the log, five points above Arsenal, leveled with Leicester City 20 points each but two and five points below Manchester City and Liverpool respectively.
