Dragan Jovic insists Primiero de Agosto will qualify to the next phase of the CAF Champions League despite poor group stage start

Angolan giants Primeiro de Agosto have enjoyed a poor start to the 2019-2020 CAF Champion League group stages, failing to winning any of the previous two group stage games, drawing at home and losing away against ZESCO United and Zamalek respectively.

Walking into Match Day 3 of the Champions League at home against group leader TP Mazembe, Dragan Jovic still believes his side will make it to the knockout stage of this year’s Champions League with four games to end the group stage phase.

“We hope to do better than in the previous participation,” Jovic was quoted as saying on Journal de Angola.

“The first step is to reach the next phase.”

The Agosto manager would have to begin his qualification ambition with a win against the DR Congo champions which makes the hurdle for Jovic a difficult one.

TP Mazembe hold a hundred percent record in the group stages, thrashing Egyptian power house Zamalek 3-0 in their first game in Lubumbashi before running away with a 2-1 victory against ZESCO United in the following week.

Mazembe’s victory in Zambia saw the DR Congo champions remain at the top of the Group A standings with six point, three points clear of second placed Zamalek.

Mazembe striker Jackson Muleka, whose brace inspired the Ravens to a win over ZESCO, is happy with the fact that he is now scoring goals away from home in the competition.

“I am happy with my performance, but especially with the collective game,” Muleka told the media.

“I will not forget this meeting because it is the first time that I score away in the Champions League.”

Muleka leads this year’s CAF Champions League top scorer chat with four goals in his two games for TP Mazembe.

Agosto and Mazembe played to a 1-1 draw in their last competitive meeting which was the 2018 Champions League quarterfinal second-leg clash in DR Congo.
