Match Report: Union Berlin 0-2 Bayern Munich, as it happened

Bayern Munich perfectly got their Bundesliga return underway after beating Union Berlin convincingly at Berlin’s own back yard.

Goals from Polish forward Robert Lewandowski and Bejamin Pavard from each half of the game hand Bayern Munich their first victory after league’s restart.

The Bavarians had a huge task to complete and obligation to extend their four points lead on the Bundesliga table, having seen Borussia Dortmund comfortably saw off weak Schalke 04 at home yesterday.

Prior to making a trip to Stadion An der Alten Försterei on Sunday, Hansi Flick’s side led second placed Dortmund just a point and a setback in a tricky away game against Union Berlin would all but dent their chances on the league log.

Flick handed all the big names a start but were still given a tough first 40 minutes before Robert Lewandowski broke the game’s deadlock, converting a spot kick to end the first half 1-0 in favor of Bayern.

Before Lewandowski’s goal, Thomas Muller had opened the score for the visitors, however seeming to have scored from an offside position, Muller’s goal was disallowed on the 18′ minute mark.

It started when Kimmich had sent in outswinging corner into the six yard box. Goretzka near the penalty spot headed the ball down, Gnabry, who was onside, later headed it past the keeper Gikiewicz from close range, and Muller in offside position should have, but couldn’t help himself from directing the ball over the line. VAR disallowed the goal.

Union Berlin who for most of the times relied on counter attacks had their chances but couldn’t convert them.

Dominant Bayern wrapped the game 10 minutes to full time when Benjamin Pavard got the better of Berlin’s defence particularly in Hubner in the air, planting it into the next from Kimmich’s dipping corner.

Bayern’s victory today extend their four points lead on the table whiles Robert Liwandowski grabbed his 26th Bundesliga goal and 40th across all competitions so far.
